He worked as a professional pilot for many years. He has been international correspondent for Vanity Fair since 2006, and in 2019 he was appointed writer-at-large for The New York Times Magazine .
Langewiesch grew up in Princeton, New Jersey , and attended college in California, where he earned a degree in cultural anthropology from Stanford University .
