Arthur John Byng Wavell was born on May 27, 1882, the descendant of a warrior family. His father, Colonel A. H. Wavell served in the Crimea while still a boy, and later participated in more than one campaign in South Africa, while his grandfather, General A. Gee. Wavell on the peninsula and elsewhere. As for his maternal uncles, he is a descendant of a famous admiral with the same name.
