The name Zuwayla was driven from the name of an ethnic group recruited into the Fatimid army from the town of Zuwayla in the Fezzan region (in Libya now) on their way from Tunisia to Egypt; this group of people used to live in this area of the gate at that time.
Al-Moayad Mosque was basically a prison and the Al-Moayad Sheikh was imprisoned in it. He swore that if he got out of the ordeal, he would buy the prison and turn it into a large mosque, and now it has become one of the most important mosques in the Al-Darb Al-Ahmar area.
